Designer Hanne Willmann about Modius
The new Leolux Modius sofa was designed by Berlin-based designer Hanne Willmann. To find out more about the idea and intention behind the design, we asked her about the genesis of this enthusiastically received newcomer. Read and hear her story.
“The brief was to design a compact, straight sofa for my own generation. This type of sofa is often popular with a slightly older target group, but thanks to the look and design language we gave Modius, it is definitely attractive to a younger generation as well. At first glance, the sofa appears to be simple and firm, and you can only sit upright on it. But when you lie down on it, it is incredibly comfortable. Modius is wonderfully soft and as soon as you lie down you notice that the armrest has just the right position for your head. You don't even need an extra pillow.”
The sofa is for people who don’t want these massive, room-taking sofa islands, but rather have like a two- or three-seater sofa with a young and modern look and an abundance of comfort.
With an upright sofa, people will always think it’s more for sitting but actually, when you lie in this sofa, it’s so comfortable. The armrest has the perfect angle, you just put your head on it, and you don’t even need a cushion. You sink in it; the comfort is just amazing.
I think the most beautiful detail is where the arm and the back meet. These two curves come together in one line and the result is a beautiful upholstery detail. It may seem very simple, but any upholsterer will tell you that it takes a lot of skill to bring those curves and lines together in one product.
If I describe the sofa in two words, probably ‘straight’ and ‘supercomfy’.
